DAYS OF APPRECIATION
Love Comes Walkin In
Love Comes Walkin In
Have you ever driven down a country road toward dusk in the last bloom of sunlight, moving music in fingertips while, an 80’s beat plays in your heart? Have you ever seen a song dance across a wild countryside playing in the backdrop of a fading landscape? I have. It was Van Halen's, “Love Walks In” like scattered memories forgotten but still full and rich. It reminded me of a simpler time where innocence had not yet matured or a bare-boned soul been burned by experience. There’s a freedom in the wind, in moving memories to a later date and time.
“Contact is all it takes, to change your life to lose your place in time…” - Van Halen
When it comes to the feeling of love, all it takes is one glance or one little smile to stop time and change your whole life in ways you never thought possible. When the connection is right it’s palpable, you can taste it. It’s immediate and powerful. My first crush, his name was Eddie but I called him Ed. We shared a stolen moment of pure vulnerability feeling the magnetic synergy between us. We had poetry and art in common. We talked below the surface and the air was intimate. We sipped in each other’s breath like a calm inside a storm. You could hear a pin drop underneath our words and when our eyes met, our hearts stopped.
In the moment, right before we kissed…
“And then you sense a change, nothing feels the same. All your dreams are strange, love comes walkin' in.” -Van Halen
When I read about this song by Van Halen, I learned it's considered to be one of the most “unintentionally terrifying love songs” every written. The reason is, it’s said to not really be about love but more so, about alien contact. I don’t think this song is unintentional at all. The feeling of love can certainly be out of this world. It can move you to places never known before, stop time and space, and give a sense of superhuman-like power. The experience can be foreign, feel strange, make you drop everything and the experience can become the focus of your future. It’s terrifying and sometimes not sustainable or have much longevity but, how sweet and light the memory, when love comes walkin’ in.
