EMOTIONAL CONCEPTS & TOOLS
SELF-EFFICACY
SELF-EFFICACY
The most common way people give up their power
is by thinking they don't have any-
Often times, while moving toward a goal, feelings of being stuck or sudden confusion and stress may arise. Then there are those feelings of disappointment, perhaps in our efforts with the sense of taking two steps forward and 100 steps back or believing that current tasks are much harder than they actually are. We often attribute these sensations and emotional experiences as lack of confidence, a misguided use of personal power. Although, your sense of confidence can be affected during the process, it is low self-efficacy, placing fault on low or lack of ability, losing sight of personal potential and undermining inherent strengths and gifts that could very well be the culprit.
What is the meaning of self-efficacy?
Self-efficacy is the belief you have in your own abilities, specifically your ability to meet the challenges ahead and to complete a task successfully. The underlying measurement is based on the strength of your individual faith in your abilities, capabilities and your capacity to achieve what you set out to do in a successful way. It is important to note the distinction between ability and capability here, having the ability to do something means you are able to carry out the task, while having the capability to do something, means you have the potential to do the task but may not have mastered the skill yet. When you have a strong sense of self-efficacy, you trust in yourself, in your abilities, skills, knowledge and wisdom. This gives you that extra layer of confidence in knowing that what you put forth, will be successful. You can build your level of self-efficacy by stacking your success, observing the endurance and success of others, surrounding yourself with people who believe you can succeed and working through your own psychological/emotional responses in a loving way.
4 Ways to Improve Self-Efficacy:
- Keep track of your daily activities in line with your goal:
list at least 3 and how they make you feel.
- Positive self-talk:
Give yourself compliments, remind yourself what motivates you to keep trying and what makes you happy. Efficacy starts when you start questioning yourself and listen to the answers. This gives you deeper insights into yourself and situation, builds trust and a more powerful sense of self.
- Look back at achievements:
Focus more on what you've gained and recall achievements. Remember your past successes and say it out loud so you can hear yourself. Use time to reignite your self-confidence and make you feel what you did then you can do now and even better than before because you've gained experience. Be active, make a list of all your past accomplishments and successes and come back to that list every time your self-trust trembles. Stay on track, no matter the size of achievements, keeping a reminder handy prevents losing perspective or undermining your capabilities.
- Self-awareness:
You must put time and effort into knowing yourself well. This is the process of self-mastery and when you master the self, you are 100% self-efficient.
